Champions as we know it has been around since 1992, however, their story actually begins in 1987. Champions’ founders and owners, Master Farid Dordar and Master Ingrid Katzberg, originally taught martial arts to roughly 80 students at Ron Andrews Community Centre from 1987-1992. In 1992, the company expanded to a small, 650 square foot space in Lower Lonsdale. Although not massive, the new location was enough for them to set up roots in Lower Lonsdale and work towards their goal of creating champions in everyday life, not just champions in martial arts.

Within a few years, Champions outgrew their little space and they decided to move to their current location in Lower Lonsdale at 125 1st Street East. Now, the 10,000 square foot martial arts academy is home to over 600 students ranging from young kids to adults. Champions believes that learning martial arts is beneficial for everyone at any age, and has classes available for all age groups.

When interviewing Connor Brown, Champions’ general manager, he explained the academy’s approach to teaching martial arts. Learning martial arts isn’t just about learning self-defense or how to throw a punch. Instead, it’s about learning to become the best version of yourself that you can be. This is what “The Champions Way of Life” is all about - creating champions in everyday life, who will find success in whatever they want to achieve. Martial arts, among other things, are great for building confidence, self-discipline, and respect for yourself and others. Martial arts provide incredible opportunities for learning about yourself. It teaches you effective problem-solving skills, how to keep calm under pressure, and how to persevere when things get difficult. The confidence that you build in martial arts is contagious, and that confidence will spread to other parts of your life. If that still doesn’t convince you to try one of the many martial arts classes that Champions offers, Champions will even bring you in for two complimentary one-on-one training sessions with one of their coaches to learn beginner techniques and stances in order to ensure that you enter your first martial arts class feeling comfortable and confident.
